[English] Yusuke Sakakibara (b. June 30, 1986, Tokai, Aichi) is a Japanese film director, screenwriter, and editor with an unusual background: before entering film, he worked as a physical therapist. Often described as a “next-generation” director whose sensibility fuses feeling and technique, he draws on that clinical experience to portray life, death, and human dignity with a distinctive, grounded honesty.

A soccer-loving student who was drawn to physical therapy after an injury, Sakakibara graduated from the physical therapy program at Aichi Fukushi Iryo College and worked for two years as a physical therapist at Mie University Hospital. Wanting to convey the realities of the medical field to the wider world, he left the profession to study filmmaking at UTB Video Academy, then worked at a production company. In 2012 he joined the film production company and pictures, and in 2013 his directorial debut, the short film A Day of Peace, a Miraculous Sun, was nominated in the Japan section of the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2014.

In 2016 he made his feature debut with BAILE TOKYO, a documentary following the 2015 season of J.League club FC Tokyo. His first narrative feature, Shiori (2018) — which he wrote, directed, and edited, drawing on his years as a physical therapist — was an official selection at the 8th Beijing International Film Festival and won the IDEM Best Cinematography Award at the 13th KINOTAYO Contemporary Japanese Film Festival. In 2019, his short film Sea Glass of the Island won the Hikari TV Award at the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia, and he was appointed a hometown ambassador for the city of Tokai. He has continued to direct across documentary and fiction, including To Your Voice (2022), a documentary on the legendary voice actor Kenji Utsumi; the co-directed feature Manga Artist, Hori Mamoru (2024); and the television drama The King of Mikasa and a Few Others (2025).

[日本語] 榊原有佑（さかきばら・ゆうすけ、1986年6月30日、愛知県東海市生まれ）は、日本の映画監督・脚本家・編集者です。映像の道に進む前に理学療法士として働いていたという異色の経歴を持ち、その経験からくる独自の感性で、生と死、人間の尊厳を、地に足のついた誠実さで描くことで知られます。「感性と技術が融合した」次世代監督とも評されます。

サッカー少年だった榊原は、ケガのリハビリを機に理学療法士を志し、あいち福祉医療専門学校理学療法学科を卒業後、三重大学医学部附属病院で2年間、理学療法士として臨床を経験しました。医療現場の現実を広く社会に伝えたいという思いから、その職を離れてUTB映像アカデミーで映像制作を学び、制作会社に勤務。2012年に映画制作会社 and pictures に所属し、2013年、初監督を務めた短編『平穏な日々、奇蹟の陽』が「Short Short Film Festival & Asia 2014」JAPAN部門にノミネートされました。

2016年、Jリーグ・FC東京の2015年シーズンに密着したドキュメンタリー『BAILE TOKYO』で長編監督デビュー。原案・監督・脚本・編集を自ら手がけた初の長編劇映画『栞』（2018）は、理学療法士としての経験をもとに描かれ、第8回北京国際映画祭に正式出品、第13回KINOTAYO現代日本映画祭でイデム最優秀映像賞を受賞しました。2019年には短編『島のシーグラス』が「Short Short Film Festival & Asia 2019」で「ひかりTVアワード」を受賞し、同年、故郷・東海市のふるさと大使に就任しています。その後も、レジェンド声優・内海賢二を追ったドキュメンタリー『その声のあなたへ』（2022）、共同監督作『マンガ家、堀マモル』（2024）、テレビドラマ『三笠のキングと、あと数人』（2025）など、ドキュメンタリーとフィクションの双方で監督を続けています。

A clinician’s eye for life and death. Sakakibara’s signature subject is the space where care meets its limits. Rooted in his years as a physical therapist, his work looks unflinchingly at illness, mortality, and family, refusing easy sentiment while preserving the dignity of those it portrays.

Naturalism over artifice. He favors authenticity — cutting any line or gesture that couldn’t occur in reality, having his cast observe real settings, and shooting largely handheld in long takes to capture performances as they happen in the moment.
