[English] Zain Al Rafeea is a Syrian actor whose life and breakthrough role became almost indistinguishable—a real refugee child cast to play a version of himself, in a film that then changed his life. Born in Daraa, Syria, in 2004, he fled the civil war with his family in 2012 and grew up as an undocumented refugee in the slums of Beirut, working as a delivery boy and unable to attend school; at twelve, during filming, he could barely write his own name. He was discovered on the street by a casting director for Nadine Labaki, who cast him as the lead in Capernaum (2018)—a boy named, like him, Zain, who sues his own parents for bringing him into a life of neglect. Working from Labaki’s largely improvised, near-scriptless method, he delivered a performance that critics called revelatory; The New York Times named it one of the best of the year, and the film won the Jury Prize at Cannes and an Oscar nomination. After the film’s release, Zain and his family were resettled in Norway with the help of the UNHCR, where—in Labaki’s words—he “regained his childhood,” attending school and learning to read and write for the first time. He has since appeared in Marvel’s Eternals (2021) and Matty Brown’s The Sand Castle (2024).
