[English] Oliver Stone (William Oliver Stone, b. September 15, 1946, New York City) is one of American cinema’s most committed and controversial political filmmakers. The son of a Wall Street stockbroker, he dropped out of Yale, briefly taught in Vietnam, then served there with the US Army from 1967 to 1968, earning the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. That experience would shape much of his work. Returning home, he studied film at New York University under Martin Scorsese.

He first won acclaim as a screenwriter, taking the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Midnight Express (1978) and writing Scarface (1983). His breakthrough as a director came with Platoon (1986), drawn from his own combat experience, which won Best Picture and earned him the Academy Award for Best Director — a feat he repeated with Born on the Fourth of July (1989). Across Salvador (1986), Wall Street (1987), JFK (1991), Natural Born Killers (1994), Nixon (1995), and later documentaries, Stone has persistently interrogated power, war, and the official versions of American history — often igniting fierce debate. He frequently mixes film formats within a single scene, a restless visual style that reached its apex in JFK, the film he has called his finest.
