New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison (Kevin Costner) cannot accept the Warren Commission’s verdict that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Reopening the case, he pulls at thread after thread — the murky world surrounding businessman Clay Shaw (Tommy Lee Jones), the shadowy figure of Oswald (Gary Oldman), the 26 seconds of the Zapruder film — and builds toward the only public prosecution ever brought in connection with the assassination. Oliver Stone weaves genuine newsreel footage with dramatized reconstruction, cutting across 35mm, 16mm, Super 8, black-and-white, and color to immerse the viewer in Garrison’s mounting paranoia. Stone himself called the result a “counter-myth” to the Warren Commission’s “fictional myth” — a film concerned less with declaring the truth than with asking how much of the truth official records will ever be allowed to reveal. Nominated for eight Academy Awards and the winner of two (Cinematography and Film Editing), JFK also prompted real-world change: the controversy it ignited led directly to the JFK Records Act of 1992.
