[English] Damien Sayre Chazelle is an American film director and screenwriter known for his passionate, music-driven films that explore artistic ambition and the cost of perfection. After studying filmmaking at Harvard University, Chazelle made his feature debut with the musical Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench (2009). He gained widespread recognition with Whiplash (2014), an intense drama about a jazz drummer and his abusive instructor, which won three Academy Awards and earned Chazelle an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. His follow-up, the musical romance La La Land (2016), became a phenomenon, earning a record-tying 14 Oscar nominations and winning six, including Best Director for Chazelle at age 32, making him the youngest person ever to win the award.
