First Man is an intimate, immersive biographical drama chronicling the years leading to humanity’s first steps on the Moon — told not as triumphant spectacle, but through the guarded interior life of the man at its center. Beginning in 1961, the film follows NASA test pilot Neil Armstrong (Ryan Gosling), a brilliant, reserved engineer grappling with private grief after the death of his young daughter, as he is selected for the Gemini and Apollo programs. Across a decade of danger, loss, and relentless pressure, Armstrong endures harrowing test flights, the deaths of friends and fellow astronauts, and the mounting strain on his wife, Janet (Claire Foy), and family — all building toward the perilous 1969 Apollo 11 mission. Directed by Damien Chazelle and reuniting him with his La La Land star Ryan Gosling, and adapted from James R. Hansen’s authorized biography, First Man renders the space race with startling, visceral realism — rattling capsules, claustrophobic cockpits, and the vast silence of the lunar surface — to deliver a moving, deeply human portrait of sacrifice, grief, and the almost unbearable cost of a single giant leap.

First Man is based on James R. Hansen’s authorized 2005 biography of Neil Armstrong and was written by Spotlight co-writer Josh Singer. The project had a long history — it was first announced in 2003, at one point with Clint Eastwood attached to direct — before Damien Chazelle, fresh from winning the Academy Award for Best Director for La La Land, came aboard and reunited with star Ryan Gosling. To achieve the film’s visceral realism, Chazelle shot much of the flight footage in tight, handheld close-ups and built practical sets and models, reserving large-format IMAX photography for the lunar sequence. Following its Venice premiere, the film drew public debate because it does not depict the planting of the American flag on the Moon; at a press conference, Canadian star Ryan Gosling described the Moon landing as an achievement of all humanity rather than solely an American one, drawing criticism from some U.S. politicians, including Senator Marco Rubio.
