[English] Sherry Hormann is an American-German film and television director known for her socially conscious dramas and adaptations of true stories. Born in the United States, Hormann moved to Germany where she studied film at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne. She began her career in German television, directing numerous TV movies and series episodes. Hormann gained international recognition with Desert Flower (2009), a biographical drama about supermodel and anti-FGM activist Waris Dirie, which became a box office success in Europe and won multiple awards. The film brought global attention to the issue of female genital mutilation. She followed with 3096 Days (2013), based on the true story of Natascha Kampusch’s kidnapping and eight-year captivity in Austria. Hormann’s other works include A Grain of Truth (2015), a Polish thriller based on Zygmunt Miłoszewski’s novel, and Nur eine Frau (2019), about the honor killing of Hatun Sürücü in Berlin. Known for her sensitive handling of difficult subject matter, focus on women’s stories and social justice issues, and ability to bring true stories to screen with authenticity and emotional impact, Hormann has established herself as an important voice in European cinema.
