Synopsis /

[English / 英語] Ten-year-old Chihiro is moving to a new town with her parents. On their way, they stumble into what appears to be an abandoned theme park, where her parents unwittingly consume food meant for the spirits and are transformed into pigs. Alone and terrified, Chihiro finds herself trapped in the bathhouse “Aburaya,” a sanctuary for the eight million gods of Japanese folklore. The sorceress Yubaba, who rules the bathhouse, steals Chihiro’s name and renames her “Sen.” To save her parents and find a way back to the human world, Chihiro must labor in this supernatural realm. Along her journey, she encounters the mysterious boy Haku, the enigmatic spirit No-Face, and the multi-armed boiler man Kamajii. The film poses profound questions: What is the significance of a name? What defines our identity? And how do we reclaim our true selves in a world that seeks to erase them?
