Will Rodman (James Franco) is a scientist at a San Francisco biotech company, working on a gene therapy drug he believes can cure Alzheimer’s disease — the disease slowly taking his father (John Lithgow). His test subject is a chimpanzee named Bright Eyes. When the project is shut down after an incident, Will discovers that Bright Eyes had been protecting a newborn infant. He takes the baby chimpanzee home, naming him Caesar (Andy Serkis).

Caesar, inheriting his mother’s genetically enhanced intelligence, grows into a being of extraordinary cognitive ability and acute emotional sensitivity — capable of love, of loyalty, and eventually of a fury that Will cannot contain. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a prequel, an origin story, and something else entirely: a film that asks whose story this is. The answer, by the final act, is unmistakably Caesar’s. Andy Serkis’s performance through motion capture is one of the defining achievements of modern screen acting — a portrayal of a non-human mind awakening to injustice that is more fully realized than most performances given by actors in conventional roles. The film belongs to the tradition of science fiction that uses the genre’s distance to ask urgent questions about intelligence, autonomy, and what it means to be treated as less than what you are.
