[English] Ang Lee (b. October 23, 1954, Pingtung County, Taiwan) is a Taiwanese-born director, producer, and screenwriter, and one of the most acclaimed and versatile filmmakers in world cinema — the first person of color, and the first Asian, to win the Academy Award for Best Director, an award he has won twice. Celebrated for a rare ability to move fluidly between cultures, languages, and genres while consistently probing themes of repression, desire, family, and the tension between duty and freedom, Lee is admired as a filmmaker who “never repeats himself.” Raised in Taiwan in a traditional family headed by a school principal father, he studied theater at the National Taiwan College of Arts, then moved to the United States, studying at the University of Illinois and film at New York University.
After years of struggle — famously spending a long period as a stay-at-home father while developing scripts — Lee broke through with his “Father Knows Best” trilogy of Chinese-family dramas: Pushing Hands (1991), the Oscar-nominated The Wedding Banquet (1993), and Eat Drink Man Woman (1994). He then stunned the industry with his versatility, directing the beloved Jane Austen adaptation Sense and Sensibility (1995), the chilly American suburban drama The Ice Storm (1997), and the Civil War film Ride with the Devil (1999).
In 2000, Lee realized a lifelong dream with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, a martial-arts epic that became a global phenomenon and won four Academy Awards, including Best Foreign Language Film. After the comic-book experiment Hulk (2003), he directed Brokeback Mountain (2005) — the tender, groundbreaking love story between two ranch hands (Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal) that won him his first Academy Award for Best Director. He continued with Lust, Caution (2007) and Taking Woodstock (2009), then won a second Best Director Oscar for the technically visionary 3D adventure Life of Pi (2012).
