Synopsis / あらすじ
English (Short Synopsis)
Los Angeles, 1928. Christine Collins leaves for work on a Saturday morning, only to return home and find her nine-year-old son, Walter, gone. Deeply embarrassed by their public failure to locate the boy, the LAPD eventually produces a youth discovered in Illinois, claiming he is Walter. Christine knows instantly that this boy is not her son; he is shorter, differently circumcised, and his dental records do not match. Rather than admit their error, the LAPD insists that she is mistaken. When she persists in her refusal to accept the imposter, the police have her forcibly committed to a psychiatric ward to silence her. Reverend Gustav Briegleb, a radio minister who has long campaigned against police corruption, takes up her cause, launching a relentless investigation that ultimately leads to Gordon Northcott’s ranch in Wineville.

1928年、ロサンゼルス。土曜日の朝に仕事へ出かけたクリスティン・コリンズが帰宅すると、9歳の息子ウォルターが忽然と姿を消していました。捜査の難航により世論の激しい批判にさらされていたロサンゼルス市警察（LAPD）は、数ヶ月後、イリノイ州で見つかった少年を「ウォルターである」と言い張り、彼女に引き渡します。しかし、クリスティンはひと目でその少年が偽物であると確信します。身長が低く、歯科記録も異なり、割礼の身体的特徴さえ違っていたのです。LAPDは自らの過ちを認めるどころか、彼女の執拗な訴えを退け、なおも真実を叫び続ける彼女を「精神異常」として病院に強制入院させ、その口を封じようとします。警察の組織的腐敗を糾弾し続けてきたラジオ牧師ブリーグレブ師が彼女の救済に立ち上がったことで事態は動き始め、やがて捜査のメスは、ウィンヴィルにある養鶏場へと向けられることになります。
