Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) is the president of her sorority, a fashion merchandising major with a 4.0 GPA, and the most popular girl at UCLA. When her boyfriend Warner (Matthew Davis) breaks up with her before leaving for Harvard Law School — because he needs someone “more serious” — Elle applies to Harvard Law. And gets in. What follows is a film that appears to be about a blonde woman proving herself in a world that underestimates her, and is actually about something more interesting: a woman discovering that her own intelligence and her own identity are not in conflict, that the things she cares about — fashion, friendship, loyalty, warmth — are not liabilities in a rigorous world but assets in a human one. Reese Witherspoon’s performance is the film’s center and its argument: she never plays Elle as less than she is, never asks for sympathy by making her pathetic, never softens the film’s thesis by suggesting Elle has to change who she is to be taken seriously. The film became a cultural phenomenon and one of the defining comedies of its era — and its central argument has only grown more clearly correct over the twenty years since it was made.
