Halla (Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir) is a fifty-year-old choir conductor in Iceland. She is also, in secret, an eco-terrorist. Armed with a bow and arrow, she runs across the Icelandic highlands to sabotage the electricity pylons of a Rio Tinto aluminium plant. She is known to the authorities only as “The Woman of the Mountain.” On her wall: Gandhi and Mandela. Then a letter arrives. An application she filed four years ago to adopt a child from Ukraine has been approved. A girl is waiting. Halla must decide whether to carry out one final, largest act of sabotage — or abandon the fight and become a mother. Woman at War is a film that manages to be genuinely funny and genuinely urgent at the same time — a feat it achieves partly through a formal invention that sounds absurd in description but is perfect in practice: throughout the film, the musicians playing the score are visible on screen, watching the action, moving with Halla across the landscape. The film is about climate grief and direct action and motherhood and sacrifice, and it is also one of the most purely enjoyable films of the decade.
