In a post-apocalyptic desert wasteland where water, petrol, and green land have become the scarcest of commodities, a nuclear war has reduced the world to dust. Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy), a former lawman haunted by the loss of his family, wanders the wasteland alone — until he is captured and taken to the Citadel, a fortress where the tyrant Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne) controls the people by hoarding the only water. When Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), one of Joe’s most trusted lieutenants, smuggles his five captive “wives” out of the Citadel in a war rig — bound for the “Green Place” of her childhood — Joe unleashes his entire army in pursuit. Max, strapped to a pursuing vehicle as a human “blood bag,” is swept into the chase and gradually becomes Furiosa’s ally. Mad Max: Fury Road is George Miller’s return to the franchise he created, after a thirty-year gap — a near-continuous chase film built almost entirely on practical stunts and real vehicles, in which a world stripped of water and green has turned every remaining resource into an instrument of power. Behind its roaring spectacle lies a stark parable about land laid waste and the violence that scarcity breeds.
