Across three years and five continents, actor and U.N. Messenger of Peace Leonardo DiCaprio travels the world to witness the realities of climate change first-hand — and to ask whether humanity can still reverse course. From the vanishing sea ice of the Arctic and the retreating glaciers of Greenland, to the palm-oil plantations replacing Indonesia’s rainforests, the flooding streets of Miami, and the rapidly growing cities of India, the film maps both the scale of the crisis and the people already living its consequences. Along the way DiCaprio speaks with figures as varied as President Barack Obama, Pope Francis, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, scientist Michael E. Mann, and entrepreneur Elon Musk. Crucially, the film presents DiCaprio not as an expert but as a learner — admitting his own doubts and contradictions — which lets it carry difficult science to a wide audience. Recurring throughout is Hieronymus Bosch’s triptych The Garden of Earthly Delights, which hung over DiCaprio’s crib as a child and which he reads as an allegory for a world drifting from paradise toward ruin. More than an account of catastrophe, Before the Flood devotes its second half to solutions — above all, the transition to renewable energy — and frames the question that still stands today: not whether change is possible, but whether it will come fast enough.
