Emerging from post-apartheid South Africa, Hood tends to refuse simple binaries in the geopolitical conflicts he portrays. Whether tracing individual trauma in the Oscar-winning Tsotsi or examining the cold, algorithmic logic of modern drone warfare in Eye in the Sky, he treats the frame as a kind of moral courtroom, where the audience is positioned as the jury. His clinical pacing, the tension he builds between state policy and personal conscience, and his reluctance to offer easy, comforting resolutions are the defining methods of a director who approaches cinema not as escapism, but as a legally literate way of documenting the fragile architecture of human responsibility.

Born in Johannesburg in 1963 and raised in the Hillbrow district, Hood graduated with a law degree from the University of the Witwatersrand before abandoning law for film, studying screenwriting and directing in California. Returning to a South Africa emerging from apartheid, he began by making educational short dramas for the country’s Department of Health. His breakthrough came with Tsotsi (2005), the story of a young Johannesburg gang leader’s moral awakening, which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film—South Africa’s first Oscar in that category.
