Martin Vail (Richard Gere), an arrogant, publicity-hungry Chicago defense attorney, takes on the pro bono case of Aaron Stampler (Edward Norton), a shy, stuttering altar boy accused of the brutal murder of the archbishop of Chicago. Convinced of the young man’s innocence, Vail squares off in court against prosecutor Janet Venable (Laura Linney), his former protégée and lover, while a psychiatrist (Frances McDormand) examines the defendant. As the trial unfolds, the Church’s buried secrets surface and Vail discovers that the case—and his client—are nothing like they first appeared. Gregory Hoblit’s Primal Fear is a taut legal thriller built on a shocking final twist, remembered above all for launching Edward Norton, whose stunning film debut earned him a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
