Born in 1946 in Pasadena, California, into a working-class acting family—her mother was a contract actress, her stepfather the stuntman and actor Jock Mahoney—she found early fame on television as the perky leads of Gidget (1965–66) and The Flying Nun (1967–70). Determined to be taken seriously, she trained at the Actors Studio and shattered her wholesome image with an Emmy-winning performance as a woman with multiple-personality disorder in the television film Sybil (1976).
