[English] Ken Kwapis (b. August 17, 1957, East St. Louis, Illinois) is an American film and television director, screenwriter, and author, widely respected as a leading craftsman of single-camera comedy and warm, character-driven ensemble storytelling. Raised in nearby Belleville, Illinois, he studied filmmaking at Northwestern University and the University of Southern California, where his thesis film For Heaven’s Sake — an adaptation of Mozart’s one-act comic opera Der Schauspieldirektor — won a Student Academy Award.

Kwapis made his feature directorial debut with Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird (1985), starring Jim Henson’s Muppets, and went on to direct a string of studio comedies including He Said, She Said (1991, co-directed with his wife Marisa Silver), Dunston Checks In (1996), and The Beautician and the Beast (1997). In the 2000s he became known for humane, ensemble-driven films such as the beloved young-adult adaptation The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005), the interwoven romantic comedy-drama He’s Just Not That Into You (2009), License to Wed (2007), and the real-life rescue drama Big Miracle (2012). He later directed A Walk in the Woods (2015), based on Bill Bryson’s memoir.

It is in television, however, that Kwapis has left one of his most lasting marks.
