Big Miracle dramatizes the true story of Operation Breakthrough, the 1988 international effort to rescue three gray whales trapped beneath the rapidly forming ice off Point Barrow, Alaska. Adam Carlson (John Krasinski), a small-town Alaska TV news reporter longing for a bigger market, stumbles onto the story of a lifetime when he discovers a family of gray whales stranded at a single, shrinking hole in the ice — their only source of air, with miles of frozen sea between them and open water. His broadcast draws national and then global attention, and soon an unlikely coalition converges on the remote Arctic town: environmental activist Rachel Kramer (Drew Barrymore), Adam’s headstrong ex-girlfriend; the local Iñupiat community, for whom the whales are traditionally a food source; an opportunistic oil tycoon (Ted Danson); rival journalists; politicians chasing good publicity; and, extraordinarily, both the U.S. and Soviet governments at the height of the Cold War. As people with wildly different motives are drawn together by the whales’ plight, a media event becomes a genuine act of collective compassion. Directed by Ken Kwapis and based on Tom Rose’s book Freeing the Whales, the film is a warm, all-ages account of how a small crisis united a divided world.

The film is based on Tom Rose’s 1989 book Freeing the Whales (later reissued as Big Miracle), an account of the real 1988 rescue known as Operation Breakthrough, in which Americans, the local Iñupiat community, and even a Soviet icebreaker joined forces to free gray whales trapped near Barrow, Alaska. Originally titled Everybody Loves Whales, the film was shot largely in Alaska, and real news footage and figures from the era were woven into the production.
