February 22, 1975, Culver City, California) is an American actress, producer, director, and talk show host, and one of the most beloved and enduring figures of her generation. A member of the legendary Barrymore acting dynasty — she is the granddaughter of John Barrymore — she began performing in commercials as an infant and made her film debut in Altered States (1980). At age seven, under the direction of her godfather Steven Spielberg, she became a global star as Gertie in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982).

Barrymore’s childhood fame was followed by a well-documented period of personal difficulty in her early teens, which she chronicled with disarming candor in her 1990 autobiography Little Girl Lost. She rebuilt her career through the 1990s with roles in Poison Ivy (1992), Boys on the Side (1995), Batman Forever (1995), Scream (1996), and the fairy-tale romance Ever After (1998), reinventing herself as a charismatic leading lady, especially in romantic comedies.
