Glory tells the true story of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, one of the first all-Black regiments in the Union Army during the American Civil War. In 1863, the idealistic young Boston officer Colonel Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick) is given command of the newly formed regiment, made up of freeborn men and escaped slaves who have volunteered to fight for the freedom of their people. But before they can face the Confederate enemy, the men of the 54th must first battle the entrenched racism within their own army — denied proper boots, uniforms, equal pay, and even the chance to fight, and treated as laborers rather than soldiers. Among them are the defiant runaway slave Trip (Denzel Washington), the wise and steadying gravedigger Rawlins (Morgan Freeman), and other men determined to be recognized as soldiers and as human beings. Through grueling training and Shaw’s growing bond with his troops, the regiment earns its place in battle — culminating in the near-suicidal assault on the Confederate stronghold of Fort Wagner in South Carolina. Directed by Edward Zwick, with an Oscar-winning performance by Denzel Washington and a stirring score by James Horner, Glory is a powerful, elegiac tribute to the dignity, courage, and sacrifice of men who fought for a freedom that had long been denied them.

Screenwriter Kevin Jarre was inspired to write the film after seeing the Augustus Saint-Gaudens memorial to Colonel Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts on Boston Common. His screenplay drew on Lincoln Kirstein’s Lay This Laurel, Peter Burchard’s One Gallant Rush, and the wartime letters of Robert Gould Shaw. The 54th Massachusetts was the first formal African-American regiment raised in the North during the Civil War; its enlisted men were Black, while its officers were white. Exterior filming took place primarily in Massachusetts and Georgia, with hundreds of Civil War re-enactors participating.
