The Matrix follows Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves), a quietly dissatisfied software programmer who, by night, is a hacker known as “Neo.” Haunted by the nagging sense that something is deeply wrong with the world, Neo is contacted by the mysterious Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) and the legendary Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), who offer him a choice that will shatter his reality. Taking the fabled “red pill,” Neo awakens to a devastating truth: the world he has always known is the Matrix, an elaborate simulation fed directly into the minds of billions of humans, whose real bodies lie dormant in vast fields, harvested as an energy source by the intelligent machines that conquered the Earth. Freed at last, Neo joins Morpheus’s small band of rebels aboard their ship, the Nebuchadnezzar, as Morpheus becomes convinced that Neo is “the One” prophesied to end the war. The Matrix was written and directed by the Wachowskis, who drew on a remarkably wide range of influences — cyberpunk literature, Japanese anime (notably Ghost in the Shell), Hong Kong action cinema, and philosophical texts including Jean Baudrillard’s Simulacra and Simulation and Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. To realize the film’s action, the directors hired veteran Hong Kong fight choreographer Yuen Woo-ping and put the principal cast through months of martial-arts training. The film introduced “bullet time,” a visual effect in which time appears to slow to a crawl while the camera sweeps around the action, achieved with arrays of still cameras.
