[English] Larysa Kondracki is a Canadian director, screenwriter, and producer, known for her feature debut The Whistleblower (2010) and for a prolific career directing acclaimed prestige television. Born in Toronto to a family of Ukrainian descent, she studied English literature and theatre at McGill University before earning an MFA in film directing at Columbia University. While at Columbia, she learned of the epidemic of sex trafficking in post-conflict Eastern Europe — a subject that resonated deeply with her — and made the short film Viko (2008), about a young man in the former Yugoslavia drawn into a trafficking web. The short’s success on the festival circuit launched her career.

Kondracki’s debut feature, The Whistleblower (2010), grew directly out of that concern. A fact-based drama starring Rachel Weisz as real-life whistleblower Kathryn Bolkovac, it was the product of two years of on-the-ground research she conducted in Europe with her co-writer, Eilis Kirwan, speaking with NGO workers and UN, EU, and OSCE officials.
