The Whistleblower is a fact-based drama inspired by the true story of Kathryn Bolkovac (Rachel Weisz), an American police officer from Nebraska who takes a lucrative job as a United Nations peacekeeper in post-war Bosnia, working for a private security contractor. Recently divorced and hoping to build a life closer to her daughter, Kathryn arrives expecting to help rebuild the rule of law. Recognized for her diligence, she is promoted to the U.N.’s gender-affairs office — and there she uncovers something far darker than she imagined: a human-trafficking ring exploiting vulnerable young women, in which private contractors and international personnel are themselves implicated, shielded by diplomatic immunity and official silence. As Kathryn refuses to look away and pushes to expose the truth, she finds herself increasingly isolated and endangered, up against powerful institutions determined to protect themselves. Directed by Larysa Kondracki in her feature debut and led by an Academy Award–winning performance from Rachel Weisz, with a supporting cast including Vanessa Redgrave, David Strathairn, and Monica Bellucci, The Whistleblower is a searing, sober drama about individual conscience and institutional complicity.

The Whistleblower is based on the real experiences of Kathryn Bolkovac, a Nebraska police officer who in 1999 was recruited as a United Nations peacekeeper in post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina, working for the private military contractor DynCorp International. While there, she uncovered a sex-trafficking operation in which contractors and international personnel were implicated, and after attempting to report it, she was dismissed; she later won a wrongful-dismissal case in a British employment tribunal and co-wrote a book about her ordeal. Director Larysa Kondracki, making her feature debut, co-wrote the screenplay with Eilis Kirwan after years of research into the case. The film assembled a notable international cast — several of whom reportedly reduced their fees to take part — and was shot in Romania.
