[English] Minami Takayama (real name Izumi Arai, b. May 5, 1964, Adachi, Tokyo) is one of Japan’s most prolific and beloved voice actors, as well as a singer and composer. She is especially renowned as a master of boy roles — able to make youthful masculinity fully convincing through voice alone — with a slightly husky, resonant mid-to-high register that lends her characters a distinctive vitality and realism. From childhood she trained in ballet, Japanese dance, and voice, and after her anime breakthrough she rose quickly to become one of the defining voices of her generation.

Takayama first drew wide attention voicing the spirited young witch Kiki (and the painter Ursula) in Studio Ghibli’s Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989). Her signature role came in 1996, when she was cast as Conan Edogawa — the shrunken teenage detective — in Detective Conan, a part she has voiced across the long-running television series and its many record-breaking feature films for nearly three decades. Among her many other celebrated roles are Rantarō in Nintama Rantarō, the title character in Moomin (The Moomins), Nabiki Tendo in Ranma ½, and countless leading boys and young heroes across anime history.
