Introduction
A Black Entrepreneur’s Glory and Runaway, Sung in Dazzling Music
August is designated in the United States as “Black Business Month.” This month was set up to support Black-owned businesses and to shed light on the difficulties they have faced as entrepreneurs and on the economic achievements they have built up nonetheless. Historically, Black entrepreneurs have been surrounded by layered barriers — exclusion from financing, discrimination from business partners, and walls to access to the market itself. Even so, by founding companies with their own hands, creating employment, and returning wealth to their communities, they have carved out a corner of the economy.
A film to watch during this month is Bill Condon’s 2006 Dreamgirls. This is a musical film starring Jennifer Hudson, Beyoncé, and Jamie Foxx, set in 1960s Detroit, with a story centered on one Black man’s rise from car salesman to record-company owner. What served as its model was Motown, the great Black-owned record company, and its founder Berry Gordy.
Watching this work from a business perspective reveals a face different from that of a mere music film. How did a Black man without capital establish his own company within a white-dominated industry? In the process of growing that business, what did the manager make his weapon, and what did he sacrifice? Where do artistic ideals and the realistic judgments needed to survive in the market collide? Through the glory and runaway of one entrepreneur, Curtis Taylor Jr., this work draws out the light and shadow of Black business, together with vivid music.

Background Knowledge
A Story Modeled on Motown and the Supremes
Dreamgirls is a film adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name, first staged in 1981. What underlies the story is the history of Motown Records and the legendary female group “the Supremes.” It is a fiction depicting the golden age of American R&B from the 1960s into the 70s from the viewpoint of a fictional group, “the Dreams.”
The Correspondence Between Real People and Characters
The main characters are all modeled to call to mind real Motown figures. Curtis Taylor Jr. evokes Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr.; Deena Jones, the Supremes’ star Diana Ross; Effie White, Florence Ballard, one of the group’s founding members; and Lorrell Robinson, Mary Wilson. As for C.C. White, Effie’s brother who is in charge of composing, while there is a view that he evokes the great singer-songwriter Smokey Robinson, who was also a vice-president of Motown, there is also an interpretation that he is an image overlaying not any single person but the ranks of Motown composers who wrote songs under Gordy.
That said, this work does not, for any person, state outright “this is so-and-so,” but is made to remain merely a suggestion. Therefore, these correspondences are all left to the audience’s inference, and are not of a nature that can be asserted one-to-one.
Incidentally, Diana Ross herself criticized this work as an appropriation of her life and said she had not watched the film. On the other hand, Mary Wilson attended the premiere and stated that she felt it was close to the truth and was moved — the contrast in the parties’ reactions directly reflects the complex human relations of the time.
Motown as a “Black Enterprise”
Behind the film’s model, Motown Records, lies a concrete history. Motown was founded in Detroit in 1959 by Berry Gordy Jr. Relying on scant seed money, he founded the company and built up a mechanism to polish the music of Black artists into a “product.” Sending out talents such as the Supremes, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, and Stevie Wonder one after another, the company grew into an enterprise that far exceeded a mere record label.
That achievement was an especially large one within the history of Black enterprise. In an age when racial segregation still ran deep, this company delivered the music of Black artists even to white audiences, and — not by law or by force, but by the choice of people themselves — pushed it up into the very mainstream of American music. By 1973, it had come to be counted at the top of Black-owned enterprises in the entire country. That Black entrepreneurship could be not merely a means of earning a living, but something that moves a nation’s culture and rewrites an era: Motown was the rare existence that proved it.
At the same time, behind that success, problems have also been pointed out — that artists’ creative freedom was restricted, that imbalances arose over profit distribution, and that cultural individuality was diluted to fit the mainstream market. The film faithfully scoops up both sides of this light and shadow.
What Makes It Exceptional
The Two Faces of an Entrepreneur, Played by Jamie Foxx
When watching this work as a business story, the modeling by Jamie Foxx, who plays Curtis Taylor Jr., stands out. He does not depict Curtis as a simple villain. The talent and tenacity to found a company from a penniless salesman and expand the business while fighting structural discrimination are, unmistakably, those of an entrepreneur.
But at the same time, in pursuit of success he comes to treat talent as numbers, cast off people as products, and distort the market by unjust means. Foxx splendidly embodied this complex person, in whom charm and coldness coexist, with a restrained performance. The audience can neither hate him fully nor defend him fully. That very discomfort is this person’s reality.
Jennifer Hudson’s Overwhelming Singing, and the Viewpoint of the One Cast Off
For the role of Effie, under a policy of casting a relatively unknown person, Jennifer Hudson, a former audition-show contestant, was chosen from an audition in which 783 people took part. She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for this film debut.
What she embodies is the viewpoint of the side cast off by the logic of business expansion. Though possessing outstanding artistic talent, she is thrown out by a single management judgment that she is not a “sellable product” — her singing voice engraves that pain and dignity with overwhelming persuasiveness. To depict a business success tale not only from the winner’s side but also from the side of the one trampled underfoot. Hudson’s presence keeps this work away from a mere success story.
The Inner Life of the “Flagship Product,” Embodied by Beyoncé
Beyoncé, who plays Deena, delicately expresses the complexity of a woman pushed up as the company’s flagship. While gaining commercial success, she gives up, in exchange, artistic satisfaction and freedom as an individual. In the process by which she — the manager’s wife and also the face of the business — gradually recovers her own will, there is a weight with a sense of reality.
