[English] Bill Condon (William Condon, b. October 22, 1955, New York City) is an American director, screenwriter, and producer, celebrated for his versatility and for directing actors to acclaimed performances across biographical dramas, prestige musicals, and studio blockbusters. Raised in New York in an Irish Catholic family — the son of an NYPD detective — he attended the Jesuit-run Regis High School and studied philosophy at Columbia University. He began his career writing and directing low-budget independent films in the early 1980s, worked steadily in television thrillers (winning an Edgar Award for the TV film Murder 101), and directed the horror sequel Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh (1995).

Condon achieved a major breakthrough with Gods and Monsters (1998), which he wrote and directed — a film about the final days of Frankenstein director James Whale, starring Ian McKellen — winning the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. He consolidated his reputation as a master adapter of stage and biographical material by writing the screenplay for the smash movie musical Chicago (2002), which won the Academy Award for Best Picture and brought Condon another Oscar nomination, and by writing and directing the acclaimed biopic Kinsey (2004), about the pioneering sex researcher.

Condon reached new commercial heights directing screen musicals and franchise films. His adaptation of Dreamgirls (2006) won two Academy Awards and three Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), and brought him a Directors Guild nomination.
