[English] Orlando von Einsiedel (b. August 1980, London) is a British documentary director and producer, known for cinematic, socially engaged films that investigate global issues — from conservation and war to personal grief — and that often aim to create real-world impact. Uncommonly, he came to filmmaking by way of professional snowboarding: a passion for travel and board sports led him to shoot snowboarding and skate travelogues in the early 2000s, and from there into documentary filmmaking. He founded the London-based production company Grain Media and began directing short films and series exploring stories around the world.

Von Einsiedel drew early attention with Skateistan (2011), a short about a skateboarding school for children in Afghanistan. His breakthrough came with his first feature, Virunga (2014), which followed the park rangers risking their lives to protect Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; he lived in a tent in the park for months, continuing to film as armed conflict erupted around him. Produced with his frequent collaborator Joanna Natasegara, the film was nominated for an Academy Award and a BAFTA and won more than fifty international awards, including an Emmy, a Peabody, and a duPont–Columbia Award for journalism.

Von Einsiedel and Natasegara won the Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject) for The White Helmets (2016), a Netflix short about volunteer civilian rescue workers in wartime Syria. His deeply personal 2018 feature Evelyn — a walking journey undertaken with his family in memory of his late brother — won the British Independent Film Award for Best Documentary. He won a second Oscar for the short Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl) (2019), about girls learning to skateboard in Afghanistan, uniting the two threads — action sports and global social issues — that had run through his whole career.
