La Reine Margot (Queen Margot) is a sumptuous, blood-soaked historical epic of love, power, and religious slaughter, adapted from Alexandre Dumas’s novel and set amid the French Wars of Religion. In August 1572, in a France torn between Catholics and Protestant Huguenots, the beautiful and willful Catholic princess Marguerite de Valois — “Margot” (Isabelle Adjani) — is married off, against her wishes, to the Protestant king Henri of Navarre (Daniel Auteuil). The union is engineered by her mother, the ruthless queen mother Catherine de Medici (Virna Lisi), ostensibly to reconcile the warring faiths — but in truth as a trap. Days after the wedding, Catherine and her allies unleash the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, a systematic slaughter of Protestants in Paris that drenches the city in blood. Amid the carnage, Margot — trapped in a loveless political marriage — begins a passionate, doomed affair with La Môle (Vincent Perez), a Protestant nobleman, even as she and her Huguenot husband forge an unlikely alliance for survival within a court seething with poison, conspiracy, and fratricidal intrigue. La Reine Margot is based on the 1845 historical novel by Alexandre Dumas (père), which fictionalizes real figures and events of the French Wars of Religion. It was a lavish European co-production (France, Italy, Germany), reportedly mounted on a budget exceeding that of the epic Germinal, and was produced by the powerful producer-director Claude Berri. The film was the fourth feature by Patrice Chéreau, a towering figure in French and international theater and opera as well as cinema. The central historical event it depicts, the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre of 1572, was a real and notorious wave of targeted killings of Huguenots (French Protestants) that began in Paris and spread across France. Isabelle Adjani, one of France’s most celebrated actresses, took the title role; the film also features an international cast including Italian actress Virna Lisi and appearances by performers such as Asia Argento. Chéreau cut the original 162-minute version to a shorter 138-minute international release; a restored director’s cut was later presented.
