[English] Massimo Troisi (February 19, 1953 – June 4, 1994) was an Italian actor, director, screenwriter, and comedian, one of the most beloved and important figures in modern Italian cinema and the leading light of a new wave of Neapolitan comedy. Renowned for his gentle, melancholic humor, his expressive face, and his hesitant, seemingly improvised way of speaking in the Neapolitan manner, he was often called a “Pulcinella without a mask” and hailed as an instinctive heir to the great Neapolitan comic traditions of Totò and Eduardo De Filippo. Born into a large family in San Giorgio a Cremano, near Naples, he suffered from a heart condition from childhood, following bouts of rheumatic fever — a fragility that would shadow his whole life.

Troisi began performing on stage as a teenager and, in 1969, co-founded a comedy group that evolved into the celebrated trio La Smorfia, with Lello Arena and Enzo Decaro. The group became a national sensation on Italian radio and television in the late 1970s through programs such as Non Stop and Luna Park, with Troisi emerging as its leader and breakout star.

Troisi made a triumphant move into cinema with Ricomincio da tre (I’m Starting Over from Three, 1981), which he wrote, directed, and starred in — a huge critical and commercial success that established him as one of the most gifted new Italian filmmakers of the 1980s. Drawing on his own Neapolitan youth, its bittersweet comedy of a young man’s troubled love life became his signature. He followed with Scusate il ritardo (1983) and worked with major figures of Italian cinema, co-starring with Roberto Benigni in Non ci resta che piangere (1984) and with Marcello Mastroianni in Splendor (1989). His crowning achievement came with Il Postino (The Postman, 1994), the internationally beloved drama about a shy island postman and the exiled poet Pablo Neruda, which Troisi co-wrote and starred in, and which became a worldwide phenomenon. Gravely ill, Troisi had postponed urgent heart surgery in order to finish the film he cared about so deeply; he died of a heart attack in June 1994, only hours after shooting was completed, at the age of 41. He was posthumously nominated for two Academy Awards — for Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay — and is remembered with deep affection in Italy as one of its finest artists.
