September 12, 1981, Chicago) is an American singer, actress, and producer, one of the most powerful vocalists of her generation and one of the rare artists to have achieved EGOT status — winner of an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony. She began singing as a child in her church choir in Chicago and performed in local musical theatre before auditioning, at twenty-two, for the reality singing competition American Idol. Although she was eliminated in seventh place during the show’s third season (2004), her extraordinary voice made a lasting impression and launched her career.

Hudson achieved a spectacular breakthrough with her very first acting role, as the powerhouse singer Effie White in the film adaptation of the musical Dreamgirls (2006). Her show-stopping performance — including the anthem “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” — won her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, along with a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and a Screen Actors Guild Award, making her the youngest African-American performer to win that Oscar and instantly establishing her as a star.
