[English] Koji Yakusho is the greatest Japanese film actor of his generation and one of the finest screen performers in the world today. His work is defined by a radical internal stillness and an extraordinary psychological depth, combined with a physical intelligence that communicates complex human emotions through the most minimal means. For four decades, he has maintained a body of work of immense range and international significance. From his portrayal of a man living with the weight of murder in The Eel to the psychological intensity of Cure, Yakusho has mastered the art of making the invisible visible. His role as Hirayama in Perfect Days—which earned him the Best Actor award at Cannes—showcased his ability to find radical contentment in the everyday. He is, quite simply, an irreplaceable global treasure of cinema.
Born in Isahaya, Nagasaki, the youngest of five brothers, Yakusho graduated from Nagasaki Prefectural Omura Technical High School and moved to Tokyo to work in the civil engineering section of the Chiyoda Ward Office. Inspired by a stage performance he saw featuring Nakadai Tatsuya, he auditioned for Nakadai’s acting school Mumeijuku—passing despite 200-to-1 odds—and was renamed by Nakadai himself: the stage name combines his former civil servant career (yakusho = government office) and a wish that his roles (yakudokoro) would broaden. He belongs to the school’s second cohort. He married a former Mumeijuku actress in 1982.

長崎県諫早市出身。5人兄弟の末っ子。長崎県立大村工業高等学校卒業後に上京し千代田区役所土木工事課に勤務。仲代達矢主演の舞台に感銘を受け無名塾に200倍の倍率を突破して入塾。芸名は前職の「役所」勤めと役柄が広くなることへの祈念から仲代が命名した。
