Air tells the true, against-all-odds story behind one of the most iconic partnerships in the history of sports and business: the creation of the Air Jordan. In 1984, Nike’s basketball division is a distant third-place also-ran, trailing Converse and Adidas, and under pressure from CEO Phil Knight (Ben Affleck) to turn things around or shut down. Sonny Vaccaro (Matt Damon), a shrewd, gambling-prone talent scout, becomes convinced that the division’s only hope is to stake everything on a single unproven rookie: a young Michael Jordan. Defying conventional wisdom, his own colleagues, and the entire industry playbook, Sonny goes all-in to court Jordan — a pursuit that leads him, crucially, to the athlete’s mother, Deloris Jordan (Viola Davis), whose belief in her son’s worth would reshape the deal and the business forever. Air was the debut release from Artists Equity, the production company founded by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, and marked the first time Damon starred in a film directed by Affleck. The screenplay by Alex Convery appeared on the 2021 “Black List” of best unproduced screenplays under the title Air Jordan before being acquired by Amazon. Affleck reunited with his frequent collaborators, cinematographer Robert Richardson and editor William Goldenberg. Notably, the character of Michael Jordan appears in the film but is never shown in full or given dialogue — a deliberate creative decision made out of respect for a figure of such iconic stature. Jordan himself reportedly gave input on the project, including requesting that Viola Davis play his mother, Deloris, whose pivotal role in the real negotiations — securing Jordan a percentage of every shoe sold — is central to the film.
