Braveheart is a sweeping, emotionally charged historical epic about freedom, love, and sacrifice, based loosely on the life of the legendary 13th-century Scottish warrior William Wallace. In the late 1200s, Scotland suffers under the brutal rule of King Edward I of England, known as “Longshanks” (Patrick McGoohan). As a boy, William Wallace loses his father and brother to the English occupation and is taken away to be raised and educated abroad. He returns as a grown man (Mel Gibson) wanting only to live in peace and farm his land, and secretly marries his childhood love, Murron (Catherine McCormack). But when Murron is brutally killed by English soldiers, Wallace’s grief erupts into open rebellion. Rallying his fellow Scots with his courage, cunning, and fiery conviction, he leads a growing peasant army to a stunning victory at the Battle of Stirling and beyond, becoming a legend and a symbol of Scottish independence. As his uprising shakes the English throne, Wallace is drawn into the intrigues of the nobility — including the conflicted heir Robert the Bruce (Angus Macfadyen) and the French princess Isabelle (Sophie Marceau) — and toward a fate that will make him immortal. Braveheart was a passion project for Mel Gibson, who produced, directed, and starred in the film — only the second feature he had directed. The screenplay was written by Randall Wallace, who was inspired to tell William Wallace’s story after visiting Scotland and seeing a statue of the medieval hero at Edinburgh Castle; he drew in part on Blind Harry’s 15th-century epic poem. Under pressure from the studio to attach a bankable star to the lead, Gibson — then in his late thirties and initially reluctant to play the younger Wallace — ultimately took the role himself. Though set in Scotland, much of the film, including its large-scale battle sequences, was shot in Ireland, where the Irish Army Reserve supplied hundreds of extras. The film is well known for its historical liberties — including its depiction of the “prima nocte” custom, the relationship with Princess Isabelle, and matters of dress and chronology — which Gibson and Wallace acknowledged were dramatized in service of the story and its emotional truth. Composer James Horner’s score became one of his most beloved.
