May 31, 1930, San Francisco) is an American director, actor, producer, and composer, and one of the most enduring and acclaimed figures in film history. First a global star as an actor — the laconic gunslinger of Sergio Leone’s “Dollars” Westerns and the hard-edged detective Harry Callahan of the Dirty Harry series — he built, over more than half a century, an equally celebrated second career behind the camera, marked by lean, unfussy craftsmanship and a recurring preoccupation with violence, guilt, and moral reckoning.

Eastwood made his directorial debut in 1971 with the thriller Play Misty for Me, and through his production company, Malpaso, went on to direct a remarkable body of work spanning more than forty films. His revisionist Western Unforgiven (1992) won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. He reached a second creative peak in the 2000s with Mystic River (2003), the boxing drama Million Dollar Baby (2004) — which won him a second Best Picture and Best Director — and the companion war films Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima (2006).
