[English] Clive Owen (born October 3, 1964, Coventry) is an English actor known for his brooding intensity, low-key charisma, and a preference for morally ambiguous characters. The fourth of five sons, he was raised in a working-class Coventry household after his father, a country-and-western singer, left the family when Owen was three. His interest in acting sparked at twelve when he played the Artful Dodger in a school production of Oliver!; he went on to train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), graduating in 1987, and performed Shakespeare with the Young Vic company.

Owen first gained recognition in the UK as the lead of the ITV series Chancer (1990–1991), but his international breakthrough came with Mike Hodges’s crime drama Croupier (1998), in which he played a struggling writer moonlighting as a casino dealer. Little seen in Britain, the film became a sleeper hit in the United States, drawing comparisons to Sean Connery and placing Owen on lists of potential James Bond successors. He built momentum with a SAG-winning ensemble turn in Robert Altman’s Gosford Park (2001) and a coolly menacing role in The Bourne Identity (2002).
