January 30, 1953, Fresno, California) is an American screenwriter, director, and producer, widely regarded as one of Hollywood’s most respected writers of intelligent, morally complex adult dramas. Of Armenian descent, he began his career as a film editor in the late 1970s before turning to screenwriting in the 1980s. His breakthrough as a writer came with Awakenings (1990), which earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Zaillian made his directorial debut with Searching for Bobby Fischer (1993), which he also wrote — a quietly acclaimed drama about a young chess prodigy that earned an Oscar nomination for its cinematography. That same year, he won the Academy Award, Golden Globe, and BAFTA for his screenplay for Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List, cementing his reputation as one of the finest adapters working in film. He went on to write for a who’s who of directors — Martin Scorsese (Gangs of New York, The Irishman), Ridley Scott (Hannibal, American Gangster), Brian De Palma (Mission: Impossible), and David Fincher (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) — and received further Oscar nominations for Gangs of New York (2002), Moneyball (2011), and The Irishman (2019).
