[English] Gene Hackman (Eugene Allen Hackman, January 30, 1930 – February 2025) was an American actor and, later in life, a novelist, widely regarded as one of the finest and most versatile screen actors of his generation. Known for his rugged, everyman appearance and his emotionally honest, naturalistic performances, he could play detectives, villains, coaches, fathers, politicians, and military men with equal conviction. Born in California and raised largely in Danville, Illinois, Hackman dropped out of high school to join the U.S. Marine Corps, and only later studied acting at the Pasadena Playhouse in California — reportedly voted, alongside his friend Dustin Hoffman, “least likely to succeed.”

Hackman’s breakthrough came with his Oscar-nominated supporting role as Buck Barrow in Bonnie and Clyde (1967), a landmark of the “New Hollywood.” A second nomination followed for I Never Sang for My Father (1970), and in 1971 he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his ferocious turn as Detective Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle in The French Connection — anchoring one of cinema’s most famous car chases. Through the 1970s he became one of the defining actors of the era, starring in the disaster hit The Poseidon Adventure (1972), Francis Ford Coppola’s paranoid masterpiece The Conversation (1974), and as the villainous Lex Luthor in Superman (1978) and its sequels.
