Amin Nawabi — a pseudonym — is a 36-year-old academic living in Denmark, about to marry his partner Kasper. He carries a secret he has hidden for over twenty years. Speaking to his close friend, director Jonas Poher Rasmussen, Amin recounts for the first time the full story of how he fled Afghanistan as a boy. What emerges is not the tidy refugee narrative he gave the authorities, but something more fractured and more human: a family scattered across borders, years of hiding in Moscow, terrifying sea crossings, and the lie he was forced to tell to survive. Told almost entirely through animation — which lets Amin remain anonymous and lets memory take on its true, unstable shape — Flee is a film about what it costs to keep silent, and what it means to finally be seen. It is also a quiet love story, and an account of coming to terms with one’s own identity. The first film ever nominated for Academy Awards in Documentary, Animated, and International Feature categories in the same year, it stands as a landmark in nonfiction filmmaking.
