Introduction
January 9th is National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day (L.E.A.D.), established in 2015. This day is when citizens across America show gratitude and respect to police officers who risk their lives daily protecting communities.
This observance was created by Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) and multiple police-related organizations to counter “negative attention directed at police” and emphasize that “citizens need to recognize the difficult and sometimes impossible duty choices police officers face.”
Law Enforcement Appreciation Day’s essence is understanding and respecting the complexity, pressure, and judgment difficulty of police work. Police officers must operate within law’s framework, cannot arrest without evidence, face pressure from public criticism and supervisors, and sometimes confront dilemmas where “justice” and “law” don’t align.
For this observance, I strongly recommend Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners (2013). Through the story of a father whose 6-year-old daughter is kidnapped who kidnaps and tortures the suspect, while a detective continues methodical investigation within law’s framework, this film masterfully depicts how difficult, lonely, and important police work is.
Hugh Jackman’s father Keller Dover rages “Why won’t police do anything?” and executes “justice” himself. Meanwhile, Jake Gyllenhaal’s Detective Loki must release the suspect due to lack of evidence, criticized as “incompetent” by public opinion, yet maintains law, attends to details, works tirelessly investigating.
The film asks: If torture would reveal the daughter’s location, is that permissible? Are upholding law and justice the same? And who finds truth—emotional father or calm detective?
Watching this film on National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day provides opportunity to deeply consider the ethical complexity and lonely pressure of police work we usually overlook.

Denis Villeneuve—Canadian Master
Denis Villeneuve is a director from Quebec, Canada who entered Hollywood with Prisoners (2013). Subsequently directing Sicario (2015), Arrival (2016), Blade Runner 2049 (2017), Dune (2021), Dune: Part Two (2024), he became one of modern Hollywood’s representative masters.
Villeneuve’s characteristics:

Aaron Guzikowski—Screenwriter’s Dedication
Screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski grew up in Brockton, Massachusetts, earned film master’s degree but couldn’t find work in New York, so began writing spec scripts while doing other jobs.
Prisoners’ origin is a short story Guzikowski conceived in 2007, completing final draft in 2009. That short was: “A father who lost child to hit-and-run driver puts perpetrator in backyard well.” This story is partially inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart.”
The script was selected for 2009 Black List (Hollywood’s most popular unproduced scripts list) and won multiple competitions. Then entered “development hell” for several years, with Christian Bale, Leonardo DiCaprio, directors Bryan Singer, Antoine Fuqua showing interest but not realizing.
Finally, with Mark Wahlberg’s support the project progressed, realized in 2013 with director Denis Villeneuve, starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Guzikowski grew up in Catholic household but currently holds no faith. However, he states making “connections frequently to Catholic iconography and biblical stories.” Prisoners deeply weaves themes of faith, sin, redemption.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s Quiet Power—Detective Loki’s Dedication
Jake Gyllenhaal’s Detective Loki is the film’s true hero. But he’s not a flashy hero. He’s quiet, dedicated, detail-obsessed, lonely detective working tirelessly.
The most impressive scene is Loki chasing suspicious man. Loki runs in rain, climbs trees, corners the man. His dedication is almost obsessive.
Gyllenhaal won Best Supporting Actor at 2013 Hollywood Film Awards for this role.
Hugh Jackman’s Intense Performance—Father’s Desperation
Hugh Jackman’s Keller Dover depicts a good father transforming into monster through desperation. Keller is survivalist, stockpiling emergency food and supplies in basement. He teaches his son “always be prepared.”
But when daughter is kidnapped, all his preparation was meaningless.
Jackman’s performance differs completely from X-Men’s Wolverine or Greatest Showman’s cheerful Barnum. Keller is dark, violent, self-destructive, his performance is hauntingly intense.
Roger Deakins—Master Cinematographer
Cinematographer Roger Deakins is legendary cinematographer who handled numerous masterpieces including Shawshank Redemption, Fargo, No Country for Old Men, Skyfall, Blade Runner 2049.
In Prisoners, Deakins earned Academy Award Best Cinematography nomination (his 15th nomination; ultimately won first Oscar for Blade Runner 2049).
Roger Deakins’ cinematography transformed Prisoners into visual poetry. Most of the film was shot in Pennsylvania winter rain (actual filming in Georgia).
Deakins earned Academy Award Best Cinematography nomination for this work.
Jóhann Jóhannsson—Musical Tension
Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson handled Prisoners’ music. Jóhannsson began collaboration with Denis Villeneuve on Prisoners, subsequently handling music for Sicario and Arrival (also initially commissioned for Blade Runner 2049 but departed due to differences).
Jóhannsson’s musical style:
