Jarhead is a fact-based war drama that upends the conventions of the combat film. Adapted from former U.S. Marine Anthony Swofford’s acclaimed memoir, it follows “Swoff” (Jake Gyllenhaal), a young man who — from a family with a history of military service — enlists in the Marine Corps and endures brutal boot camp before being selected for an elite Scout Sniper unit, paired with his spotter Troy (Peter Sarsgaard) under the watchful eye of Staff Sergeant Sykes (Jamie Foxx). In 1990, his battalion is deployed to the Saudi Arabian desert for the Gulf War. But instead of the combat they were trained and psyched up for, the Marines face something else entirely: endless waiting, oppressive heat, boredom, and creeping psychological strain, as the war they came to fight remains just out of reach. Cut off from home and gnawed at by rumors of unfaithful partners, Swofford watches his own sense of purpose — and sanity — erode in the sand. Directed by Sam Mendes and shot by legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins, Jarhead is a strikingly unconventional war film: less about battle than about the surreal futility, alienation, and psychological toll of modern warfare.

Jarhead is based on Anthony Swofford’s 2003 memoir Jarhead: A Marine’s Chronicle of the Gulf War and Other Battles, a critically lauded best-seller — the title is military slang for a U.S. Marine, referring to their regulation haircut. Universal acquired the rights shortly after publication, and director Sam Mendes — fresh off American Beauty and Road to Perdition — came aboard, working with screenwriter William Broyles Jr., himself a former Marine who served in Vietnam. Mendes and Broyles reshaped Swofford’s non-linear book into a focused account of training and desert deployment. The film reunited Mendes with cinematographer Conrad Hall’s successor in his regular collaborators, here the great Roger Deakins, and editor Walter Murch, and its depiction of the burning Kuwaiti oil fields became among its most indelible imagery.
