Before he became the first African American Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, Thurgood Marshall was a young lawyer for the NAACP, traveling the country to defend Black people accused of crimes they did not commit. Marshall dramatizes one such case: in 1941 Connecticut, a Black chauffeur named Joseph Spell (Sterling K. Brown) is charged with the rape and attempted murder of his white employer, Eleanor Strubing (Kate Hudson). Marshall (Chadwick Boseman) arrives to defend him but is silenced by a hostile judge who bars him—an out-of-state attorney—from speaking in court. Forced to work through Sam Friedman (Josh Gad), a local Jewish insurance lawyer with no criminal experience, Marshall must win the case as a strategist from the shadows. Reginald Hudlin’s film is both a taut courtroom drama and a portrait of the young man who would go on to argue Brown v. Board of Education and reshape American law. Chadwick Boseman, in one of several roles he played based on real historical figures, anchors the film with quiet, coiled authority.

アフリカ系アメリカ人として史上初のアメリカ合衆国最高裁判所判事となる前、サーグッド・マーシャルは全米黒人地位向上協会（NAACP）の若き弁護士として、無実の罪で告発された黒人たちを弁護するために全米を飛び回っていた。本作が描くのは、そのなかの一つの事件だ。1941年のコネチカット州、黒人運転手ジョゼフ・スペル（スターリング・K・ブラウン）が、雇い主の白人女性エレノア・ストルービング（ケイト・ハドソン）へのレイプと殺人未遂の容疑で起訴される。弁護に駆けつけたマーシャル（チャドウィック・ボーズマン）だが、州外の弁護士であることを理由に、差別主義的な判事から法廷での発言を封じられてしまう。刑事事件の経験のない地元のユダヤ人保険弁護士サム・フリードマン（ジョシュ・ギャッド）を通してしか動けないなか、マーシャルは「黒子の戦略家」として裁判に勝たねばならない。レジナルド・ハドリン監督の本作は、緊迫した法廷劇であると同時に、のちに『ブラウン対教育委員会裁判』を戦いアメリカの法を変えることになる若き男の肖像でもある。実在の歴史的人物を複数演じたチャドウィック・ボーズマンが、静かに張り詰めた威厳で作品を支えている。
