[English] Masato Harada (July 3, 1949 – December 8, 2025) was a Japanese film director, screenwriter, producer, novelist, actor, and film critic, one of the most versatile and prolific figures in modern Japanese cinema. Born in Numazu, Shizuoka, and a passionate movie lover from childhood, he went to London to study English and then, from 1973, based himself in Los Angeles, where he began his career as a film critic — interviewing Hollywood greats such as Howard Hawks. That immersion in American filmmaking would shape his craft throughout his life.

Harada made his directorial debut with Goodbye Flickmania (1979). He drew wide attention with the science-fiction film Gunhed (1989) and, above all, with Kamikaze Taxi (1995), a genre-crossing crime drama that won honors at France’s Valenciennes film festival and established his international reputation. Through the following years he became known for socially engaged, densely written dramas rooted in real events and institutions — the corporate-corruption thriller Spellbound (Kinyū Fushoku Rettō, 1999) and the police-standoff drama The Choice of Hercules (2002) among them — while also directing entertainment fare such as the horror films Inugami (2001) and The Box (Mōryō no Hako, 2007). In 2003 he made his Hollywood acting debut in The Last Samurai.

Harada reached a career peak with Climber’s High (2008), an intense human drama about a newspaper reporting on the 1985 Japan Air Lines crash, which was recognized across many categories at the Japan Academy Film Prize. He won the Special Grand Prize of the Jury at the Montreal World Film Festival for the autobiographical Chronicle of My Mother (2012).
