[English] Michael Radford (Michael James Radford, b. February 24, 1946, New Delhi) is a British film director and screenwriter, best known internationally for the beloved, Oscar-nominated Il Postino (1994). Born in New Delhi during the final years of British India, to a British father and an Austrian mother, he was raised and educated in England, attending Worcester College, Oxford, and then the National Film and Television School. He began his career directing documentaries and writing for television comedy before moving into feature filmmaking in the early 1980s. Radford has often cited the French and Czech New Waves — and his friendships with filmmakers such as Jiří Menzel and Ivan Passer — as formative influences.

Radford made his feature debut with Another Time, Another Place (1983) and came to international attention with Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984), his stark, faithful adaptation of George Orwell’s dystopian novel, starring John Hurt as Winston Smith and Richard Burton in his final screen role. Filmed in and around London during the very months in which the novel is set, and shot by the future master cinematographer Roger Deakins, it was widely praised as one of the finest screen versions of Orwell. He followed with White Mischief (1987), a drama of decadence and murder among British colonials in wartime Kenya.

Radford achieved his greatest success with Il Postino (The Postman, 1994), the tender Italian-language drama about a shy island postman befriended by the exiled poet Pablo Neruda. Adapted by Radford from Antonio Skármeta’s novel and led by the beloved Massimo Troisi — who died the day after filming ended — the film became an international phenomenon and, for a time, the most successful foreign-language film ever released in the United States. It won Radford the BAFTA Awards for Best Direction and Best Film Not in the English Language, and earned him Academy Award nominations for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. He went on to direct the improvised ensemble piece Dancing at the Blue Iguana (2000) and a landmark first film version of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice (2004), with Al Pacino as Shylock, among other films, continuing to work across British, European, and international cinema.
