[English] Richard Linklater (b. July 30, 1960, Houston, Texas) is an American filmmaker, one of the most distinctive and independent voices in modern cinema, celebrated for loosely structured, deeply humane films preoccupied with suburban life, youth, conversation, and above all the passage of time. Largely self-taught, he worked on an offshore oil rig before immersing himself in film, and in Austin, Texas — where his career has remained rooted — he founded the Austin Film Society and his production company, Detour Filmproduction.

Linklater emerged as a key figure of 1990s American independent cinema with the plotless, wandering Slacker (1990), then drew on his own adolescence for the beloved ensemble comedy Dazed and Confused (1993), which helped launch Matthew McConaughey and became a cult classic. In 1995 he began one of cinema’s most singular projects, the Before trilogy: Before Sunrise (1995), for which he won the Silver Bear for Best Director at Berlin, followed by Before Sunset (2004) and Before Midnight (2013) — each filmed nine years apart with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, tracing one couple’s romance in real time across two decades.

A restless experimenter, Linklater moved fluidly between the mainstream and the avant-garde: the rotoscope-animated Waking Life (2001) and A Scanner Darkly (2006), the hit comedy School of Rock (2003), and the docudrama Fast Food Nation (2006). His masterwork Boyhood (2014) — filmed in short bursts over twelve years to follow a single boy from age six to eighteen — won him the Golden Globe for Best Director and earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Director, and Screenplay. More than any other filmmaker, Linklater has made the literal passage of time his material — filming the same actors over 9-year gaps (the Before trilogy) and across 12 years (Boyhood) — turning duration itself into a way of capturing how people, and life, actually change.

The “hangout” film and the primacy of talk. Working in a loose, naturalistic, plot-light mode, Linklater favors films organized by presence and conversation rather than event — bounded stretches of time in which characters simply talk, drift, and connect — recurring themes of youth, memory, and everyday philosophy running throughout.
