Synopsis / あらすじ

Synopsis: William Kamkwamba’s family grows maize in Wimbe, Malawi. When drought destroys the 2001 harvest and the country faces famine, the family’s reserves disappear quickly. William’s school fees cannot be paid; he is withdrawn from school. He finds a way to keep using the school library. There he finds Using Energy, a textbook that includes diagrams of wind turbines. He becomes convinced he can build one — that if he can pump water from the ground to the fields, his family and their neighbors can grow food through the dry season. His father Trywell, exhausted by the crisis and unable to see how a boy’s project relates to their survival, does not initially believe him. William builds anyway.

あらすじ: ウィリアム・カムクワンバ一家は、マラウイのウィンベ村でトウモロコシを育てています。2001年の干ばつで収穫が壊滅し、国全体が飢饉に見舞われると、一家の備蓄はすぐに底をつきます。学費が払えなくなったウィリアムは退学になりますが、なんとか学校の図書館に通い続け、『Using Energy』という教科書の中に風車の図面を見つけます。地下水を畑まで汲み上げることができれば——そう確信したウィリアムは、廃品置き場の部品で風車を作り始めます。生存の危機に疲弊した父トライウェルは、最初は息子の計画を理解できません。それでもウィリアムは作り続けます。
