Unbroken tells the true story of Louis “Louie” Zamperini (Jack O’Connell), a troubled boy who transforms himself into a record-setting distance runner and competes in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. When the Second World War breaks out, Zamperini enlists as a bombardier in the U.S. Army Air Forces. In 1943, his plane goes down in the Pacific, and he survives an astonishing 47 days adrift on a life raft with two crewmates — battling starvation, thirst, sharks, and the open sea — only to be captured by the Japanese Navy. Sent to a series of prisoner-of-war camps, he endures more than two years of brutal captivity, becoming the singular target of a camp officer he comes to know as “the Bird” (Miyavi). Through it all, Zamperini refuses to be broken, drawing on extraordinary reserves of will and endurance. Directed by Angelina Jolie and adapted by a screenwriting team including the Coen brothers from Laura Hillenbrand’s bestselling biography, the film is a sweeping, handsomely mounted tribute to human resilience — the story of a man who survives the unsurvivable and, in life beyond the film’s frame, ultimately finds his way to forgiveness.

The film is Angelina Jolie’s second feature as director. It is based on Laura Hillenbrand’s 2010 nonfiction bestseller Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption, with a screenplay credited to a team including Joel and Ethan Coen. Principal photography took place in Queensland, Australia, from October 2013 to February 2014. The real Louis Zamperini died on July 2, 2014, at age 97, before the film’s release; he had been closely associated with the production and lived to see footage of his own life story. Ahead of its overseas release, the film’s depiction of the Imperial Japanese Army’s treatment of POWs became the subject of controversy in Japan, and some online commentators labeled it “anti-Japanese,” with campaigns both to block and to support its release. Partly as a result, no Japanese distributor initially picked up the film, and its domestic release was delayed. It eventually opened in Japan on February 6, 2016, under the title Fukutsu no Otoko: Unbroken. Some Japanese critics and filmmakers who saw the completed film argued that the “anti-Japanese” framing was overstated and had spread before most people had actually watched it, and used the episode to discuss freedom of expression and how such labels come to be applied. / 海外公開に先立ち、本作における旧日本軍の捕虜の扱いの描写が日本国内で物議を醸し、一部のネット上の論者からは「反日映画」とのレッテルを貼られ、公開を阻止しようとする動きと、公開を支持する動きの双方が起こりました。その影響もあり、当初はどの日本の配給会社も本作を買い付けず、日本公開は遅れることになりました。最終的に、2016年2月6日に『不屈の男 アンブロークン』の邦題で日本公開されています。完成した映画を観た一部の日本の批評家や映画人は、「反日」という枠づけは誇張されており、多くの人が実際に本編を観る前に広まったものだと指摘し、この一件を、表現の自由や、そうしたレッテルがいかにして貼られるのかを論じる機会として取り上げました。
