8 Mile is a gritty, semi-autobiographical drama set in the underground hip-hop scene of Detroit in 1995. Jimmy Smith Jr. (Eminem), who performs under the name “B-Rabbit,” is a young white blue-collar worker from a poor family, living in a run-down trailer home north of 8 Mile Road — the highway that marks the dividing line between the largely Black inner city and the whiter suburbs, and between poverty and something better. Chasing a dream of making it as a rapper in a genre dominated by Black artists, Jimmy is dogged by self-doubt, choking on stage at a local rap battle in front of a hostile crowd. His life is a churn of hardship — a job at an auto-stamping plant, a volatile mother (Kim Basinger) and her abusive boyfriend, an unreliable circle of friends, and a fragile new romance with the ambitious Alex (Brittany Murphy). But with the support of his best friend Future (Mekhi Phifer) and driven by the raw material of his own struggles, Jimmy works toward a shot at redemption on the microphone. The film’s title refers to 8 Mile Road, the real thoroughfare marking the boundary between the city of Detroit and its northern suburbs — a line long freighted with racial and economic division. Though not a literal retelling of Eminem’s life, the film draws heavily on autobiographical elements from the rapper’s early years in Detroit, and it marked his acting debut. Director Curtis Hanson — an Academy Award winner for the screenplay of L.A. Confidential — insisted on authenticity, shooting on location in Detroit and casting real figures from the local scene. The film’s centerpiece song, “Lose Yourself,” written by Eminem with Jeff Bass and Luis Resto, became the first hip-hop song to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song, topped the Billboard Hot 100 for twelve weeks, and is now regarded as one of the definitive anthems of perseverance.
