[English] Curtis Hanson (Curtis Lee Hanson, March 24, 1945 – September 20, 2016) was an American director, screenwriter, and producer, a versatile and meticulous craftsman equally at home in taut thrillers, literary character studies, and gritty human dramas. Born in Reno, Nevada, and raised in Los Angeles, he dropped out of high school and went to work as a photographer, writer, and editor for Cinema magazine — an experience he later called his real film school, giving him access to interview and learn from working directors. He entered the film industry in the early 1970s, co-writing The Dunwich Horror (1970) and directing low-budget features, and spent years writing screenplays, including White Dog and Never Cry Wolf, before his directing career took hold.

Hanson achieved commercial breakthrough with the hit psychological thriller The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992), starring Rebecca De Mornay as a vengeful nanny, and followed it with the white-water action-thriller The River Wild (1994), with Meryl Streep. He then reached the peak of critical acclaim with L.A.
